Wellness Corner 47: Chai Time

Hey Falcons,

Can you smell that? Aromas of masala and sugar wafting through the air?

Across South Asian cultures, chai time (tea time) is revered as a moment of togetherness in our otherwise chaotic, uncertain lives. Every afternoon at around 4, people gather to share tea and food with family, friends, and neighbors. While seemingly simple, this practice has several positive effects on social, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

  1. Social Connection: Sharing chai is a way of building and strengthening connections. It provides an opportunity for people to come together, engage in conversations, and foster community. Connecting with others can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.

  2. Stress Relief: Enjoying a cup of chai in a relaxed setting can serve as a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a perfect moment of relaxation and stress relief. Taking the time to prepare and enjoy tea can encourage mindfulness and being present in the moment.

  3. Bonding and Solidarity: Chai is often considered a symbol of hospitality and friendship. Sharing tea with others signifies warmth, openness, and a willingness to connect. It's a way of expressing care and building bonds with both close acquaintances and new friends.

  4. Cultural Identity: Engaging in this practice allows South Asian individuals to connect with their cultural roots and heritage, which can contribute to a sense of belonging and identity.

  5. Support System: In times of celebration, grief, or other life events, sharing chai can be a way for people to come together to provide emotional support and solidarity.

Let’s try to take some time to enjoy the little moments when we can bond with our loved ones this week.

Stay well,

Eshaan
